Ready for state waters

Finally, some rest.

After the waves of the Continental A-League swim and dive meet had settled, both the Littleton and Heritage high school swim teams had plenty of athletes to rest this week in preparation for the state showdown in Fort Collins.

Heritage swimming played host to the league finale Feb. 6 at the school in Littleton. The Eagles finished in second place with 433 points, behind champions Regis which had 663.

Littleton finished in seventh place with 239 points. All three of Littleton’s relay teams will be heading to the Class 5A state meet. The team will also be represented in the 200-yard individual medley, the 100 freestyle, the 100 backstroke and the 100 breaststroke.

“We’re fairly young and we’ve had some great senior leadership from our captains,” coach Stringy Ervin said of their season. “They’ve worked hard and hopefully [at state] we’ll be improved some.”

Serving as captains for Littleton this year were Kim Utter, Lucy Fox and Elise Peterson. Utter finished second at the league championships in the 100 breast with a time of 1 minute, 8.45 seconds.

Ervin said the team would be working on the little things this week that make a difference when the competition gets tougher.

“Starts and turns,” the coach said. “The higher up you go the more the little things come into play. We should take care of that, try to rest them a little more and hope they are ready to go.”

Tenacity and teamwork is what defines the Lions this season, Ervin said.

“They care a lot about each other. That shows,” he said.

As for Heritage at the league championships, sophomore Shelly Patton was the league champion in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.21. She was also the runner-up in the 500 free with 5:12.52 on the clock.

Senior Andrea “Snoopy” Slouka finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with 24:54.

The Eagles also won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:40.91 and were runners-up in the 400 free relay with 3:39.68 and the 200 medley relay with 1:51.41.
