Gem club wins Web award
Dan Alfrey, Web master, vice president and field trip coordinator for the Lake George Gem & Mineral Club, received an Honorable Mention certificate of appreciation, after placing fourth in the Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies 2009 contest — 2.5 points separated Alfrey from first place in a tight race that had member clubs from Colorado taking three of the top four spots.
The final six were: first place, Arvada; second place Colorado Springs; third place, Tulsa, Okla.; fourth place, Lake George; fifth place, Kingman, Ariz.; sixth place, Salt Lake City.
The contest took place in March after the Park County club’s Web site had been online for a year and a half. The Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies covers 12 states — Arizona, Alaska, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming. Alfrey also has been invited to judge this year’s contest.
“The nicest thing about this contest is that the RMFMS provided a detailed system on the items we would be graded on, which motivated me to make sure our Web site covered those topics,” Alfrey said. “I am happy to say that the one thing they pointed out that needed addressed was youth involvement, and we now have our new Pebble Pups program in place with great results so far.”
The Web site has had more than 3,100 hits since the end of 2007 and has been helpful in the growth of the club along with great field trips and interesting programs. It can be found at www.LGGMclub.org.
Alfrey lives in Woodland Park with his wife, Jennifer. The couple also are active with the Ute Pass Kiwanis as newsletter editor and secretary, respectively, and they have two college-aged children, Tiffany and Greg.
