Littleton prepares for Operation Christmas Child

Christmas is arriving early all over Littleton, as Life Care Center of Littleton, Mardel Christian and Education, and Calvary South Denver prepare to serve as collection points for Operation Christmas Child. Soon, with the help of Littleton volunteers, the sites will be brimming with festively wrapped shoe boxes full of gifts.

Through Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project, Littleton residents are packing shoe box gifts for children in more than 100 countries suffering from natural disaster, war, terrorism, disease, famine and poverty. From Littleton, the shoe box gifts will be sorted and sent using whatever means necessary — sea containers, trucks, trains, airplanes, boats, camels, even dog sleds — to reach suffering children around the world.

Items can be dropped off:

Calvary South Denver: from 1-5 p.m. Nov. 16-19 and Nov. 21, from 1-7 p.m. Nov. 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 22, and from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 23.

Life Care Center of Littleton: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 16-22.

Mardel No. 17 Inc. Retail Store, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 16-17 and 19-21, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 18, by appointment Nov. 22, and from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 23.

In 2008, the Littleton area contributed 3,609 shoe boxes to the Operation Christmas Child effort. This year, organizers hope to collect 5,000 gift-filled shoe boxes from families, kids, churches, schools and civic organizations in the area.

Board member needed for South Suburban

The South Suburban Parks and Recreation District is seeking qualified candidates to fill a vacancy on its board of directors. The board will review letters of interest, and appoint a new director to fill a term that expires in May 2010. Candidates must be eligible electors of the district.

Persons interested in applying are asked to submit a letter of interest with the following information: name, address of residence or property owned in district, background and qualifications, value you believe you would bring to the district board and willingness to run for election in May 2010 to continue to serve on the board of directors.

Letters of interest should be sent by Nov. 30 to the district’s administrative office at 6631 S. University Blvd., Centennial, CO 80121 or e-mailed to Teresa Cope, Communications Director, at teresac@sspr.org.

The vacancy on the board is a result of board member Phil Cernanec leaving his term early to serve on Littleton’s city council. South Suburban’s five board members are elected at large to serve four-year terms.

League of Junior Cotillions starts local chapters

The National League of Junior Cotillions, a program of etiquette, character education, and social dance training for middle and junior high school students, has announced plans to establish its national program in Douglas and Arapahoe counties.

The purpose of the NLJC program is to give students instruction and practice in the courtesies that make life more pleasant for them and those around them. Students actively learn courtesies through a creative method employing role playing, skits, and games.

Standard ballroom and line dancing is taught using nationally approved top 40 music.

In addition to the usual courtesies connected with dancing and etiquette, character instruction is also provided regarding the following: honor, respect, ethics, sportsmanship, acknowledgments of gifts, behavior at cultural and civic events, correspondence, inter-action in groups, introductions, paying and receiving compliments, receiving lines, table manners, instructional dinners, electronic etiquette, cell phone courtesy, and many other areas of social conduct.

Applications or nominations for a cotillion director are currently being received. For additional information call 800-633-7947, visit www.nljc.com, or e-mail to cotillions@nljc.com.
