School board elects Gorsky president
By Tom Munds
The Nov. 4 Englewood School Board meeting agenda included swearing in board members Scott Gorsky, Michelle Gonzalez and Gene Trumbull and time for the members to elect Gorsky as board president for the next two years.
The swearing-in was necessary because voters were scheduled to elect three board members as part of the Nov. 3 election. However, there wasn’t really an election because by the time residents received their ballots, there were only three candidates for the three board seats.
A fourth candidate withdrew but the withdrawal came after the ballots had been printed. So, even though the issue appeared on the ballot, votes weren’t counted.
Gorsky returns to the board for a second full term. Gonzalez was appointed to the board in May to fill the vacancy created when former member Shelley Thompson resigned because she and her family moved out of the district. Turnbull served eight years on the school board and left in 2005 because of term limits.
Grosky said he was happy to step up when fellow board members asked him to be president.
“I am honored the board members selected me as president,” he said. “We know we face a difficult time with trying to balance the budget with the announcement there will be about 4 percent less money from the state next year.”
He said he feels the district is headed in the right direction and will try to all he can to help the board continue to do all possible to provide a quality education to every student in Englewood schools.
In addition to selecting Gorsky as board president, board members named Karen Miller first vice president, Gonzalez second vice president, Vicki Howard as secretary and Turnbull as treasurer.
