Design, plans proceed for rail extension
By Robyn Lydick
To get a light rail station at Lucent, voters will have to say yes to FasTracks a second time.
The 2.5-mile extension from Mineral Avenue to Lucent Boulevard and Colorado 470 will cost $168.3 million.
Regional Transportation District directors have yet to decide if they will take a tax proposal to voters in November 2010.
“We absolutely do not want to do this again,” said Jack O’Boyle, a director on the RTD board representing Lone Tree, Parker and part of Highlands Ranch.
He emphasized that directors have not decided to take a tax question to voters.
What RTD wants is to finish this part of FasTracks as envisioned in 2004, complete with the extensions in Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree.
The extension would follow the railroads along Santa Fe Drive, join a highway flyover bridge soaring over C470 and Santa Fe Drive, and travel along the south side of C470 to Lucent Boulevard, where RTD will build a new end of the line station.
A parking garage with 1,000 parking spaces would be built there.
An intermediate station just north of WindCrest retirement community is planned for later construction.
“We want to get these projects shovel-ready,” said Andy Mutz, an engineer with the project.
RTD lost out on federal stimulus dollars because they were slated for projects that were designed and ready to break ground.
The flyover bridge for Santa Fe Drive and C470 has been approved and will be built next year.
Should RTD bring a sales tax question to voters, and they approve, construction would start in 2011.
