Parker teams bring plenty to state
By Benn Farrell
Legend cross country met a milestone at the Class 3A state high school championships. Chaparral had both its teams in the Class 5A show as usual. Ponderosa’s girls teams brought a full boat to show how it has continued to improve and Lutheran High School-Parker had plenty to say in the 2A races this season.
Teams from Parker high schools got to show their end-of-season stuff once again at the 2009 state cross country championships Nov. 7 at Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins.
Chaparral (5A)
Chaparral High School has always had top-threatening teams at the 5A state championship races. This season, the Wolverines boys team finished in a fifth-place tie with Monarch at 242 points.
Junior Keagan Vargo led Chaparral to the finish line and landed himself in seventh place among the classification’s male runners. He finished with a time of 16 minutes, 14.64 seconds. Behind him in 24th place was senior Curtis Doubet with 16:40.34. Senior Brendan Burt came in at 48, and senior Josh Lake was in 56th place. Also running for the boys team at state this year was junior Nathan Purdue, sophomore Cyrus Ferguson and senior Ryan Bull.
The Wolverines girls team didn’t have the same luck this time out; however, they did improve their team finish from last year. Chaparral finished in 19th place among 24 girls teams. Senior Caroline Hine led the team in with 20:01.97 and a 49th place finish. Senior Lexi Pavlich came in at 97, and freshman Shannon Ferguson finished at 110.
This season, the Wolverine girls were far healthier than last year when they dealt with injuries close to the state meet. Chaparral finished 24th last year.
“This year, we have a lot of underclassman and a lot of new people on our team. It made us a lot stronger,” Hine said. “A lot more people were healthier this year. We had a lot of injuries last year.”
Also running for the Wolverines girls in the state dance was sophomore Megan Bakemeyer, sophomore Janey Heard and sophomore Julia Nyiro.
Hine, being a senior who has qualified for state all four years, said she and others helped the team’s younger runners get acquainted with the course at Fossil Ridge.
“We walked the course and let them know some of the things they needed to watch out for,” Hine said. “We know what type of course it is and how to pack it.”
Ponderosa (5A)
Ponderosa High School’s girls team qualified as a team last season after years of only a couple runners making it into the field; however, the Mustangs showed its talent hasn’t diminish having qualified the entire boat in 2009 as well.
As a team Ponderosa finished in 21st place as a team among 24. Leading the Mustangs in was junior Bre Hemming with a time of 20:10.92 for an individual finish at 60. Senior Tobi Kroskob came in at 104. Amanda Lark, a sophomore, finished at 114 and Kate Sowell, also a sophomore, landed at 117.
Also running for the Ponderosa girls team this year at state was junior Maggie Kroskob, senior Kate Limebrook and freshman Paige Runco.
Legend (3A)
Legend High School was only able to qualify one female runner in its debut season last year. The boys team missed state contention by only seven points at the regional meet, after almost dominating everything else until then. This year, the Titans boys were determined not to let that happen again, and the team qualified in its second season for the Class 3A race.
Legend finished in 18th place as a team, while sophomore Matt Thompson led the Titans with a 28th place finished and a time of 17:39.48. Thompson said the boys team stepped up training in the off season, fueled by the narrow miss at state contention last year.
“We got some new people, and we trained a lot harder over the summer,” Thompson said. “The summer before was training three days a week, but it was five days a week last summer. It must be just more intense practicing and we got older.”
Peter Ricci, a junior, finished 88th, and freshman John Reynolds came in at 101. Also running for the Titans at state this year was senior Will Savoie and junior Carson Walker. Thompson said, even though the Titans jump up two classifications next season, their team qualification wasn’t a fluke.
“We jump up to 5A next year, and we want to be back here next year,” Thompson said. “Just look for us.”
Lutheran-Parker (2A)
Lutheran High School-Parker brought a full girls team and one male runner to the Class 2A races this season. The Lions girls finished in seventh place as a team and was led in by freshman Kendall Horan, a freshman, with a time of 20:32.76 to place her 12th in the field.
Horan said the course was hard but not as hard as others the Lions have seen this season.
“It wasn’t the hardest with the hills, cause there wasn’t that many,” Horan said. “The team did good this year. I like my team.”
Sophomore Lauren Ortmayer finished in 29th place. Cameron Sims, also a freshman, was 43rd. Also qualifying from the girls team was junior Amy Otte and sophomore Kim Walbek.
The sole Lions boys runner, junior Calder Marriott, finished in 59th place.
