Arapahoe got a last hurrah for the season against Lakewood. Heritage enters the Class 4A playoffs as the No. 5 seed. Englewood garnered its first win. Littleton missed a spot in the 4A playoffs after a loss to Ralston Valley, and Cherry Creek advanced to Round 2 of the 5A showdown all in Week 10 of high school football.
Arapahoe 42, Lakewood 18
Arapahoe (3-7) got another four quarters before turning in its gear for the season as the non-qualifying teams of the Class 5A state championship playoffs were paired up for battle. The Warriors beat Lakewood 42-18 Nov. 5 at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood.
Arapahoe’s workhorse all season, senior David Gunter, scored five rushing touchdowns including ones for 41 yards, 38 and 32 yards. Jacob Childers also broke one into the end zone on a 1-yard run. The Warriors individual statistics were not reported by press time.
Englewood 13, Arvada 2
Englewood closed out its season by posting its first win of the campaign by defeating Arvada, 13-2.
Pride was on the line as both teams came into the game looking for the first win of the season to close out the year.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard in the first period when quarterback Jacob Lowder faked the handoff, tucked the ball away and ran 18 yards to the end zone. He booted the extra point to put Englewood up 7-0, the first time they have led in a game all season.
Lowder finished the night completing 10 of 20 passes for 111 yards. Mike Tolle was the leading rusher with 13 carries for 30 yards while Tim Newcombe caught one pass for 28 yards and Ben Gutierrez had a pair of catches for 23 yards.
Mike Goodwin helped spearhead the defense with seven tackles that included sacking the quarterback four times.
Heritage 56, Dakota Ridge 24
Heritage (9-1) enters the Class 4A state championship playoffs as the No. 5 seed. The Eagles will face No. 12 seed Ralston Valley (7-3) in the first round Nov. 14.
In their last game of the regular season, Heritage beat Dakota Ridge 56-24 Nov. 6 at Littleton Public Schools Stadium in Littleton. Shane Opitz had five touchdowns for the Eagles, including four TD passes from quarterback Mitch Griebel. Three of the touchdown passes were for 30, 54 and 76 yards. Opitz also returned an interception 68 yards for another touchdown. Griebel also ran a touchdown in himself for 68 yards.
Jimmy Ellis had a rushing touchdown for 80 yards, and Blair Zimmerman scored on a 21-yard touchdown run.
Griebel finished with 211 passing yards. Ellis had 96 rushing yards, while Griebel had 78. Opitz booked 166 yards receiving.
Ralston Valley 56, Littleton 31
In the final game of its season, Littleton (6-4) took a loss at the hands of Ralston Valley Nov. 5 at NAAC Stadium in Boulder, narrowly missing a place in the 4A state title playoffs. The Mustangs beat the Lions 56-31.
Mister Jones scored three rushing touchdowns for the Lions, including one for 80 yards and another for 35. Noah Gaumer also punched one in the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown rush. Kicker James Dottavio, who went 4-for-4 on point after touchdown attempts, put a 29-yard field goal away.
The Lions finished the season with a 6-4 overall record, 3-4 in the 4A North Metro League.
Cherry Creek 23, Chatfield 7
Cherry Creek (5-5) advanced to the second round of the 5A playoffs as the No. 24 seed with a 23-7 upset over No. 9 Chatfield Nov. 6 at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood. Last year’s state runner-up Bruins will face No. 8 seeded ThunderRidge (8-2) in Round 2. Game time was not determined by press time.
Against Chatfield, Creek quarterback Kain Colter threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to John Joyce and ran one in for 18 yards. John Neal returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown. Kicker Nick Gauna put a 25-yard field goal in the books.
