Tri-Lakes to get Fraternal Order of Eagles Club

A recruiting drive is underway to form a local Eagles Club in the Tri-Lakes area. “Although we offer something for everyone, we’re the best kept secret in the world,” said Ken Daily, Past Worthy President, and Commissioned Deputy Grand Worthy President.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles, F.O.E, has two main divisions. It’s a fraternal organization with the theme of “People Helping People,” and a social organization where members can come to relax and mingle with fellow members.

The national organization was founded in 1898 in Seattle, Wash., and was originally named, “The Order of Good Things.” Although, the name was changed within a few weeks after adopting the Bald Eagle as the group’s symbol, the original name aptly describes today’s Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Aeries and Auxiliaries are the names the local chapters are called.

“There are over 1,800 Aeries and Auxiliaries in the United States with memberships totally 1.2 million, and 26 Aeries and Auxiliaries located in Colorado with over 9,000 members,” Daily said .

Within the Eagles are separate functioning organizations, Jr. Eagles for children 8-18, and Under 35 for younger adult members.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles was instrumental in getting four major pieces of national legislation passed: Old Age Pensions, Social Security, Jobs after 40, and Medicare. They’re also responsible for starting Mother’s Day.

Eagles support national projects of the organization, and each one determines local needs of their area.

Nationally, the Fraternal Order of Eagles raises millions of dollars in support of fighting cancer, heart and kidney disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s, spinal cord injury and diabetes.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles National Diabetes Research Center is at the University of Iowa, a renowned leader in diabetes research.

The Eagles also have 17 18-wheeler tractor-trailers equipped and ready to roll in support of national disaster relief.

Eagles are active in support of abused children. The state president’s special project this year is the Pueblo Child Advocacy Center.

Locally, the Eagles support “Kids for Christmas,” where each child is given lunch and $100 to go shopping, although accompanied by an adult the choice is theirs on how to spend the money.

“Ninety-nine percent of the kids buy for others in the family,” Daily said.

Food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas are traditional local support items.

The Eagles also support first responders by offering free first-year membership.

In case of death, the Eagles Memorial Foundation guarantees that every child of every Eagle member will receive educational grants to attend college, technical or trade school, and payments for needed medical and dental services until their 18th birthday.

On the social side, membership provides a safe outlet for members to come and go at their leisure, or to attend organized social functions throughout the year, marking holidays and special events.

Seven United States Presidents have been Eagles: Theodore R. Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.

“Fraternal Order of Eagles membership is open to both men and women,” Daily said.

A get-together organizational meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Nov. 18 at the Sundance Mountain Lodge (formally the Falcon Inn) at 1865 Woodmooor Drive, next to the fire station.

Members get their names on a plaque in the Aeries, and receive a pin marking them as a charter member, an honor held only by those that have signed up by the charter date.
