Highlands Ranch and Ponderosa helped create a four-way tie for first place in the Southern League after Week 8 of high school football. Castle View’s win streak was ended by Liberty. Mountain Vista took a hefty loss against the defending state champions, and Rock Canyon moved into a tie at third in the Pikes Peak League with a win over Sand Creek.
Ponderosa 13, Douglas County 10
Ponderosa (6-2) helped shake things up in the Southern League standings Oct. 23 at Burt.com Stadium in Parker after a 13-10 win over Douglas County (4-4). Riley Lange scored a 4-yard rushing touchdown for the Mustangs, and quarterback Tommy Thornton broke in the end zone on a 1-yard run. Thornton finished with 92 passing yards and 84 rushing. Tyler Sandt had 75 yards receiving.
County’s Nick Harp scored on an interception run back 36 yards, and Dylan Moon put a 18-yard field goal attempt through the uprights. Huskies quarterback Jeremy Belk had122 passing yards.
Liberty 42, Castle View 14
Castle View (5-3) took a 42-14 road loss against Liberty Oct. 22 at District 20 Stadium in Colorado Springs. The Sabercats’ Clint Kirby scored on a 3-yard touchdown run, and Corey Herman ran another touchdown in for 27 yards.
The Cats’ Marshall Thurston finished with 131 passing yards.
Highlands Ranch 13, Doherty 12
Highlands Ranch (6-2) continues to find a way to get the win, this time against Doherty Oct. 23 at Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch with a 13-12 final.
Joe Hansley scored on a 4-yard touchdown run for the Falcons. Kicker Jared Gomes scored two field goals; the first for 35 yards and the second for 26.
Steve Donatell rushed for 82 yards, and Hansley finished with 66 yards rushing.
Mullen 38, Mountain Vista 6
Mountain Vista (5-3) took a non-league loss at the hands of the undefeated defending Class 5A state champions Mullen Oct. 23 at Brother Bernard Kinneavy de La Salle Stadium in Denver by a 38-6 final.
Vista’s Jesse Geary scored the Golden Eagles’ only touchdown on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Geary finished with 68 rushing yards. Brandon Oswald had 49 yards receiving, and Isaac Archuleta had 49 passing yards.
Rock Canyon 49, Sand Creek 21
Rock Canyon (6-2) moved into third place in the Class 4A Pikes Peak League, with Pueblo West, after a win over Sand Creek Oct. 22 at Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch.
The Jaguars’ Drew Sandlin threw for 227 passing yards and four touchdown passes. Martin Castro rushed for 127 yards, and Matt Hopper finished with 129 yards receiving.
Valor Christian 21, Elizabeth 14
Valor Christian (8-0) remained undefeated after a road win over Elizabeth Oct. 23 at Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth with a 21-14 final.
Eagles quarterback Brock Berglund threw two touchdown passes; one to Maxwell McCaffrey for four yards and another to Ryan Nu'u for 45 yards. Berglund finished with 168 passing yards. Nu’u booked 103 yards receiving. Jared Ward had 76 rushing yards.
Ponderosa 13, Douglas County 10
Ponderosa (6-2) helped shake things up in the Southern League standings Oct. 23 at Burt.com Stadium in Parker after a 13-10 win over Douglas County (4-4).
