St. James is 50 and counting
By Holly Cook
In 1959, Denver Presbytery purchased five acres of alfalfa-laden land at then-unpaved Lowell and Belleview in order to develop a community-centered church with hundreds of members.
St. James Presbyterian was chartered on Nov. 22, 1959 in part to meet the needs of the large influx of Martin Marietta families with the growth of the space program.
Groundbreaking for the original block building was on Feb. 21, 1960 under the guidance of Reverend R. M. Hudson, the organizing pastor. From 1960-65 the church grew from the original 100 charter members to 600 members and regular visitors.
In addition to traditional worship services each Sunday, St. James helps house homeless families, serves 100 people every other week through the Food Bank, provides a preschool, and a Community Concert Series.
Thirty-one years ago, St. James launched an inner city coffee house on 13th street in Denver.
Today, known as St. James Urban, it continues to provide a refuge for the homeless, marginalized poor and runaways to stop and talk to staff, volunteers and each other without anyone judging them.
Recently, St. James joined Love Inc., a group of Littleton community churches, to share resources to serve the less fortunate in neighborhoods by providing food, clothing, life skill training and transitional housing.
St. James will complete a year-long celebration during the weekend of Nov. 20-22, the anniversary of the charter.
A year-long celebration has included a 50 mile Bike Ride, a Back to the ’50s costume party with dinner and entertainment, a Bridge Party reminiscent of the ’50s, a Jubilee Journey to San Luis Valley for campers and lodgers, and a Celebration Cruise in September, which follows the Footsteps of the Apostle Paul from Rome to Corinth.
During Western Welcome Week they hosted the Dakota Blonde Concert for WWW and joined the parade in commemoration of our 50th.
Please call the church for more information: 303-794-6851.
