Moscow String Quartet to perform in Littleton
By Sonya Ellingboe
The award-winning Moscow String Quartet has played in major concert halls of Europe and the United States and appeared at many important music festivals and at the White House. In the 1990s, the quartet was in residence at DU’s Lamont School of Music and at CU Denver, and perhaps more visible locally than in recent years.
Classical music lovers are in for a special evening when the Moscow String Quartet performs music of Haydn, Beethoven and Shostakovich at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13, in Littleton United Methodist Church’s Fine Arts Series.
Members are violinists Eugenia Alikhanova and Galina Kokhanovskaia, violist Tatiana Kokhanovskaia and cellist Olga Ogranovitch, all graduates of Moscow’s two leading conservatories; the Moscow Conservatory and the Gnessin Music Institute. They received post-graduate training under the supervision of professor Valentin Berlinsky, a member of the internationally respected Borodin Quartet, according to Ogranovitch.
International recognition followed when the quartet won the 1978 Leo Weiner International Quartet Competition in Budapest, Hungary, followed by a win in an international competition in France the following year. Since then, the group has performed to critical acclaim and recorded for several labels.
