Critters, characters attend Halloween carnival

Ghosts, goblins, zombies, several Batmen, a couple Spidermen and a wide variety of other characters took their place in the line leading into the Englewood Recreation Center and the Oct. 24 Halloween carnival.

Visitors were offered a bag for the goodies they collected and then got their first candy from a pair of cackling witches hovering over a caldron filled with treats.

Jessica Stokes and her two children all donned costumes for the carnival.

“We have been coming to the Englewood Halloween Carnival every year for the last 10 years or so,” Jessica said. “The kids really look forward to it and so do I. The kids love the games and the haunted house. This is always a great family outing that is safe and a lot of fun for all of us.”

There were a lot of unusual costumes including the family that dressed like Wizard of Oz characters.

“My daughter Shellee wanted to be Dorothy and talked to the family about dressing up too,” said Pam Schwartz, dressed as the wicked witch. “Shellee asked her Uncle Tony (Abeyta) to dress up so he is our good witch.”

Tony’s wife Charity Abeyta was the Cowardly Lion and Steve Bonin dressed as the Scarecrow.

“This is a fun night,” Shellee said. “The most fun is Uncle Tony dressed as the good witch.”

A popular attraction was the creepy-crawley room with live snakes, lizards and turtles visitors could handle.

Mandy Archer let her 18-month son Joe ride the turtle.

“This is the first time my two children and I have come to Englewood’s Halloween Carnival and so far, it’s been a lot of fun,” she said. “I was a little scared when Joe got on the turtle but he didn’t seem to be afraid and I think he was having fun.”

Mike Lucero kept track of his three children and two neighbor’s children as they all went through the haunted house.

“The haunted house was pretty good,” he said. “The kids did a lot of screaming but, when we got out, they laughed and said they wanted to go again.”

He said he appreciates the fact Englewood puts on the family-oriented Halloween Carnival.

“It ain’t like it was when I was growing up and me and my brothers would go out to see how much candy we could collect,” the long-time Sheridan residents said. “Now, I only let the kids got to the houses of people we know on the block. But, this carnival is a chance to wear the costumes, laugh, get some candy and have fun, knowing we can have a good time in a place that is safe for everyone.”
