WPPD launches new Community Information Service
By Norma Engelberg
Sgt. Jim Halloran announced the launch of the Woodland Park Police Department’s new Community Information Service.
The service is provided free of charge both to those who sign up and to the police department from Nixle, LLC, which also offers a commercial version of the service.
The service will deliver information to a cell phone via text message, by e-mail or on the Nixle Web site. Information includes alerts, advisories, community events and traffic updates.
“I was playing with the system when we had the big snowstorm,” Halloran said. “We weren’t ready to launch, but that would have been an alert situation.”
Signing up is free, easy and confidential. Just go to www.nixle.com, register a phone number, an address and/or an e-mail address. The messages are instantaneous. Within a split second of signing up, registrants have an e-mail welcoming them to the system and giving them more information.
“This would be great for people who live in Woodland Park and work in Colorado Springs,” Halloran said. “They can register their cell phone using their home address and get information, for example, that schools are closing early or that a snow storm is blocking the pass.”
People who work in Woodland Park or Teller County but live in Colorado Springs can register their work address to get the latest updates that could affect them on the ride to or from work.
“We can send the information to just one address or to every address in the area,” Halloran said. “It’s that versatile.”
Halloran hopes to work with other local agencies — the county, various other police departments and the school systems, for example.
