Creek reaches softball quarters
By Benn Farrell
It was a solid ride for Cherry Creek High School softball this season, but it ended shy of a state title bid.
Bruins softball reached the quarterfinals round of the Class 5A state championship tournament Oct. 23-24 at Aurora Sports Complex in Aurora before getting eliminated by eventual champion Legacy.
In Region 4 action, Cherry Creek was beaten by Standley Lake early in the playoffs 4-0, but the Bruins later eliminated George Washington 10-0. Creek picked off Standley Lake for a spot in the 5A state bracket, also with a 4-0 final.
In the first round of the state tournament, Creek (16-7) came in as the No. 12 seed and opened against No. 5 Green Mountain (16-5). Creek trailed by one run until the top of the six inning, when it posted its two runs and preserved them. The Bruins had four hits and two errors against the Rams and held them to two hits.
With the win, the Bruins defeated Mountain 2-1 and advanced to the second round against No. 4 Eaglecrest (18-3).
With a 1-0 win, after four hits and no errors, over Eaglecrest, Creek advanced to the quarterfinals against the undefeated Legacy Lightning (18-0), the No. 1 seed. Laura Leonard had the only hit for the Bruins against the state champs. The Lightning beat the Bruins 16-1 to end Creek’s season with an 18-8 overall record.
