Library system upgrades to easy-to-use software

The Elbert County Library District’s four libraries will upgrade their online library catalog software, and the change will be implemented Dec. 1.

The Library Corp. will provide Library.Solution, a integrated library system designed specifically for small to medium-sized libraries. This new system will enable district staff to manage the entire automated process from ordering books and other library materials to cataloging to placing books on the shelf.

Patrons will find that managing their accounts will be easier too, from locating a book to placing holds and speeding up the check out process.

Library.Solution includes an updated Web site. On Dec. 1, library users can log in, write book reviews and discover what everyone else thinks about the new titles available. They will be introduced to the “Book River,” a scrolling, computerized display of titles available throughout the district, as well as online news feeds and best seller and book award lists to assist in selection.

Patrons will have the option to track what they have checked out by asking a staff member to turn on their loan history. They will be able to access their account from home by using the library card number and PIN. In the existing system, borrowers can keep a list of books they are interested in checking out and renew the books they have checked out. This will still be available. If you have items on “My List,” be sure to print it out so that you can re-enter the information in Library.Solution.

All four branch libraries in the Elbert County Library District will, for the first time, share the same online catalog. Patrons will be able to search all locations at the same time.

The district is making a commitment to using the latest technology to improve the library experience in our communities and allowing staff to focus more time on customer service. Staff look forward to introducing the new online catalog to patrons on Dec. 1.

Spear is elected to lead Elizabeth Presbyterian

The congregation of Elizabeth Presbyterian Church has elected Dr. Bruce Alan Spear, D.Min, as its new pastor and head of staff. Spear began work Oct. 26 and conducted his first worship services Nov. 1.

Spear comes to EPC with approximately 18 years of experience in pastoral ministry. Most of that experience was with Bear Creek Evangelcal Presbyterian Church in Lakewood, a church of about 450 members.

He received his master of divinity degree from Denver Seminary in 1991. In 2006, he received his doctor of ministry degree from Graduate Theological Foundation. His area of emphasis was spiritual transformation.

Speaking on behalf of the Pastor Nominating Committee, the group that conducted the pastor search, Elder Phil Wood said, “We believe Dr. Spear will be a blessing to both the church and the community of Elizabeth. Bruce has a deep love for people, a strong desire to help people grow spiritually, cope with the difficulties of life, and minister to others.”

His first sermon series is on the subject of true love — what it is and how to make it the driving force in your relationships and your life — will be running each Sunday for the first four weeks of November. He will be teaching about love as defined in the book of 1 John.

“In addition to preaching and teaching,” Wood said, “Dr. Spear hopes to get the church more involved in the community and to be a resource for the community, helping to fulfill various needs.”

Spear and his family have been residents of the Denver area for more than three decades, living in Littleton for the past 15 years. They are planning to move to Elizabeth next summer.

The election of Spear brought to conclusion an active search process that lasted a full year. All told, the church was without a called pastor for more than two years as the church went through the process of transition required by the denomination. The church is grateful to the Rev. Carlyle Spohr who, as interim pastor, helped guide the church through the transition.

Elizabeth Presbyterian Church, with a congregation of about 130 people, is at 325 S. Banner St. in Elizabeth, three blocks south from Highway 86. Sunday worship services are at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.
