Event brings in food and shopping
By Ashley Dieterle
Hoping to raise food for the Parker Task Force Food Bank, one Parker woman did not know what to expect when she started her food drive project.
Now with the help of the community, the project had grown larger than she ever imagined.
Leah Ryan is hosting a food drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Coldwell Banker office located at 18801 E. Mainstreet. But this is not the typical food drive. Those who donate not only provide needed items for those less fortunate in the community, but also can enjoy shopping discounts. After a person donates three or more items, he or she will be given a shopping pass that is redeemable at booths set up in the office building during the food drive. Each booth will provide a discount for those with the shopping pass.
“I wanted to do something that would benefit the community and since Thanksgiving is just around the corner, the food bank in Parker is getting short and it seemed that a food drive would be a really good idea,” Ryan said.
A variety of booths will be set up from various businesses in Parker including Pampered Chef, Premier Jewelry, Tastefully Simple, a handmade blanket and scarf booth and a photography booth. Shoppers can use their shopping pass at every booth benefiting from each discount.
“I am hoping to get as much food as the community can offer to help those less fortunate than others at this time of year,” she said. “And people can get some cheaper holiday shopping done.”
Ryan said she was impressed with community support she received while organizing the food drive. Many businesses donated gift cards and gift certificates for door prizes during the food drive.
“I am really excited about how much the community has done to help especially Codlwell Banker,” she said. “I could not have done this with out them.”
