Derby team splits into two squads
By Benn Farrell
The Castle Rock n’ Rollers took on a new look last week.
The local women’s flat-track roller derby league split into two home teams for the first time Oct. 23 at Douglas County Events Center in Castle Rock. Skaters shed the usual purple and white colors of its traveling team and wore red to become the Arson Angels and black as the Miss Demeanors.
The split is an indictor of things to come with the Rollers, as the league’s inaugural season starts to wind down to its final home bout Nov. 21 at the events center against the Slaughterhouse Derby Girls.
Rollers founder Pinki Flowers said the Castle Rock n’ Rollers will have the two teams again next season, which starts in May, while tryouts for the outfit’s traveling All-Stars team will be in January.
Flowers herself was out of action for the home teams bout and will be off the track for the rest of the season. Pregnant with her fifth child, Flowers will return to the track with the Rollers in June. She continues to help the operation from her administrative capacity.
Flowers said ticket sales for the Rollers’ home bouts have been consistent through the league’s first season, with the exception of last month when Castle Rock played host to the eight-year strong Denver Roller Dolls, when the turnout was less than usual.
Being off the track may be a blessing of timing for Flowers, as she has started to promote the pre-sales of her book, titled “11:59.59 - Memoir of a Derby Girl,” which she is self-publishing and aspires to have its first run near the turn of the year.
