Heartbreaker ends Vista state show
By Benn Farrell
Mountain Vista has been a staple of the Class 5A state high school softball championship tournament for years.
But in some of those years, the Golden Eagles have stepped in a big pile of bad luck. This was one of those years.
As the host of the Region 6 tournament, Vista earned its state bid after losing to Brighton but beating Mountain Range a second time 11-8. Vista came into the state tournament as the No. 11 seed with a 12-4 record. They would face No. 6 Pomona in the first round.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, having led most of the game through the sixth inning, Vista lost to Pomona 9-8 Oct. 23 at Aurora Sports Complex in Aurora, effectively ending the Eagles’ season with a 12-5 overall record.
In the Pomona game, junior Kam Smallwood finished 2-for-4 at bat with a home run and an RBI. Junior Dani Pepper (2-for-3, RBI), junior Brook Healy (2-for-4, RBI) and senior Marina Long (1-for-5) each connected for a double.
Vista finished second in the Continental League.
