Southern League teams look toward the Class 5A state championship playoffs this weekend after Chaparral, ThunderRidge and Highlands Ranch finish the regular season with a 7-2 record after Week 9 of high school football. The Sabercats destroyed Air Academy, and Valor Christian remains undefeated.

Chaparral 35, Palmer 21

Chaparral enters the Class 5A state championship playoffs after a 35-21 win over Palmer Oct. 31 at Burt.com Stadium. The No. 7-seeded Wolverines play host to Grand Junction (No. 26) in the first round.

Against Palmer, Spencer Duran ran in four touchdowns. His longest was for 28 yards. Christian Gann also scored on a 21-yard run. Quarterback Andrew Loudenback had two successful 2-point conversion passes.


Loudenback finished with 144 passing yards. Duran ran for 268 yards.

Castle View 41, Air Academy 0

With one week left in the regular season, Castle View rolled past Air Academy 41-0 Oct. 30 at District 20 Stadium in Colorado Springs, even with missing two days of practice because of the winter storm that swept through Douglas County and the South Metro area last week. Highlights from the game were not reported by press time.

Highlands Ranch 20, Douglas County 17

Highlands Ranch beat Douglas County Oct. 30 at Douglas County Schools Stadium with a 20-17 final. Ranch enters the Class 5A state championship playoffs as the No. 11 seed with a 7-2 record, while County enters as No. 27 with 4-5. The Falcons will play host to Bear Creek in the first round of the bracket. County will travel to hosts Thomas Jefferson for Round 1.

In their final Southern League matchup, Ranch’s Jared Gomes had two field goals, one for 38 yards and one for 44. Steve Donatell connected a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jerry Zavala, and he later threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Joe Hansley.

County’s Jeremy Belk had a 3-yard touchdown pass to Justin Hall. Nimon Malouf ran one in for seven yards, and Dylan Moon kicked a 32-yard field goal. Belk finished with 108 passing yards. Malouf rushed for 151 yards.

Mountain Vista 33, Ponderosa 21

Mountain Vista enters the 5A playoffs as the No. 12 seed with a 6-3 record after beating Ponderosa, the state’s No. 13 seed with a 6-3 record, by a 33-21 final Oct. 31 at Burt.com Stadium in Parker.

Vista’s Jesse Geary scored two rushing touchdowns, one for seven yards and another for two. Bradon Oswald ran back a blocked bunt for a TD, and Brian Caggiano scored after recovering and running back a punt return fumble. Christian Thomas also scored on a 3-yard rush. Quarterback Isaac Archuleta passed for 104 yards. Jesse Geary rushed for 164 yards.

The Mustangs’ Tyler Sandt scored two touchdowns. One was on a 13-yard rush and the other was catching a 51-yard pass from quarterback Tommy Thornton. Riley Lange also scored on a 1-yard run. Ponderosa individual statistics were unavailable by press time.

Rock Canyon 43, Widefield 20

With one more week to play, Rock Canyon put up a win against Widefield 43-20 Oct. 30 on the road. With the win, the Jaguars advance to a 7-2 overall record, 4-2 in the Class 4A Pikes Peak League. Highlights from the Widefield game were unavailable by press time.

ThunderRidge 20, Doherty 3

ThunderRidge qualified again for 5A state championship contention in its second year of being in the classification. As the No. 8 seed, the Grizzlies will play host to No. 25 Horizon in the first round of the playoffs.

In the win over the Terrors Oct. 31 at Garry Berry Stadium in Colorado Springs, Kwade Glassman scored on a 12-yard touchdown run. Derek Munsey scored a rushing TD on a 2-yard run. Logan Beck kicked two field goals, one for 26 yards and another for 43. Individual statistics for the Grizzlies were unavailable by press time.

Valor Christian 59, Ridge View Academy 12

Valor Christian stayed undefeated with a 59-12 win over Ridge View Academy Oct. 31 at their school in Highlands Ranch.

Eagles quarterback Brock Berglund had three touchdown passes. Blake Froistad was the receiver for two of them, his longest for 17 yards, and Taylor Brown caught one for 5-yards. Berglund ran for 85 yards to score a rushing touchdown himself.

George Talanoa scored on a 2-yard run. Ryan Nu'u caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Michael Miller, after which Matt Corral converted the 2-point conversion pass. Kicker Taylor Yancey sailed a 37-yard field goal through the uprights.
