Learning what’s out there for parents

Published: 11.03.09
Last week, I was in a meeting about our new-look Douglas County Youth Guide program and realized how much things have changed.

The Youth Guide has been around for a while.

Now, it's expanding. What was once a special section that appeared in the paper during select months of the school year now has it's own Web site and Facebook page. In addition to the listings of events that made up the bulk of Youth Guides gone by, the Web site will regularly get stories from all of our communities about what's happening with kids.

Our Facebook page allows more interactivity than we've ever had before. If you have something you want to talk about, now you can throw it out there to what, we hope, will become a vibrant online community of parents thinking about some of the same issues you are.

For us, it gives us a chance to learn more about you whether there are serious issues you're concerned about such as swine flu or something as fun as finding the best sledding hill in the neighborhood as evidenced by photos you can post. We're posting content there now and will continue to do so, but the page is yours and we're curious to see what you do with it.

It's also one of those things I'm looking forward to benefiting from as a consumer. Not even two months ago, my daughter, Olivia Grace, was born. We know Olivia's awfully cute. Beyond that, we're on the learning curve of our lives.

My wife and I aren't worried about finding a good sledding hill just yet, but we have questions — lots of them — and we're learning a bunch in a short period of time. We're trying new things and stumbling upon parts of our community we never knew existed, whether it's a support group for moms trying to figure out feeding routines for their babies or businesses that help parents with very little time prepare home-cooked meals for themselves.

We have Joan Gandy and Heidi Harden working on this project. They've been at this parenting thing longer than I have, and in recent weeks, they've wanted to know where to find pumpkin patches, hay rides, the best "kids eat free" restaurants and things that a good night's rest let you wonder about.

Hopefully, the Douglas County Youth Guide, in its varied forms, will be the place for me and my wife and Heidi and Joan and all of you to learn about the things that parents want to know about. Along the way, I hope we've created something that will be a little fun, too.

Check us out. You can get to the Douglas County Youth Guide site by clicking on the ad on this paper's home page. If you're on Facebook, search for Douglas County Youth Guide. Tell us what you think.
