Questioning council doesn’t mean you’re a ‘hater’

Some of Englewood’s councilmembers supporters have deemed citizens as being “Haters of Englewood” because they dared to question or give differing ideas than those that the council promoted.

This election season has been a busy one for all running for office. As you can imagine, there has been a lot of discussion regarding ideals and priorities during this time. There has been an issue arise in Englewood regarding concerned citizens and those serving on city council.

In the past year or so, there have been many questions and comments raised by citizens of Englewood to our presently seated city council. These questions have been very legitimate and citizens have had deep concerns over policy decisions that the present council has made and will be making.

An interesting scenario has arisen from those who have presented concerns (including myself) to city council. Many citizens have presented questions and concerns to our council regarding what they felt were issues regarding the direction of our city. These citizens have taken their precious time to go and sit through council meeting while putting their fears of public speaking aside and address our council only to be ridiculed and discounted by council and the mayor.

Here is a great question: Does asking a question or raising a concern to our elected officials or the incumbent candidates constitute “Hate Speech”? Supporters of the incumbent candidates for the city council race have accused concerned citizens who have addressed serious concerns about our city as being ”mean and hateful” because they dared to address our elected officials in a manner that went against the positions of council.

I believe that citizens not only have the right to raise questions and concerns to our elected officials, but it is also all of our duty to do so. Citizens should never have to fear retribution because they cared for their city enough to stand in front of the council and address them with concerns.

I believe our city deserves better than that. As a city councilman, I would be committed to listening to all opinions, including those that differ from mine. Citizens will be safe from tyranny and ridicule from me as long as I serve as councilman for this great city.

I still believe Englewood is the best place to raise a family, own a company, and have a good quality of life. I will also do my best to present it as a “full service” city that is family friendly and a welcome place for our businesses to set up shop. The citizens of Englewood truly deserve our best. I expect that those who have differing opinions from mine to let me know what they are. I believe we learn most from other people and their ideas. To discount differing opinions and comments would be a great disservice to our residents!

I have run my campaign on issues, not what I believe my opponent has done or is doing wrong. He can answer for that himself! To view my information, please go online at www.EnglewoodCitizen.com.

Rick Gillit

Candidate for city council
