Cards win snow bowl

Coach Chris Cline took his Elizabeth High School football team to Ridge View Academy Oct. 10 for an afternoon game. It was 17 degrees with an inch and a half of snow on the field.
However, the Cardinals beat Academy 35-8.
The Elizabeth defense shut the Rams’ offense down from start to finish. With 58 seconds left in the first quarter, the Cards’ Zach Butler scored from one yard out, plus he got the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead at the end of the quarter.
At the 6:08 mark in the second quarter, Brad Goldsberry ran two yards for a Cardinals touchdown and picked up the 2-point conversion to make the score 16-0 at halftime.
With less than 10 minutes in the third quarter, Goldsberry got into the end zone for another 6 points. With 2:20 left in the third, quarterback Dalton Taylor connected with Sean Dorrance for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Josh Seeley added the point after touchdown for a 29-0 Cards lead at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth, Evyn Mclean scored on a one-yard run before Cline put in the junior varsity team to preserve the 35-0 lead. With 41 seconds left, the Rams scored on a pass and added the 2-point conversion for a 35-8 final.
The Cards had 19 first downs with 340 yards rushing, 365 yards total. Butler rushed 19 times for 116 yards and a touchdown. Goldsberry rushed 17 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 15 yards. Matt Biery rushed 11 times for 81 yards. Taylor rushed four time for 34 yards and made three completions on five passes with one touchdown. Mclean rushed once for his one-yard TD. Dorrance finished with 10 yards receiving on his touchdown.
Goldsberry, Chase Cline and Peyton Hopkins all had fumble recoveries.
The Elizabeth defense was not affected by the low temperature either. The Rams never got into the end zone while the Cards’ varsity defense was on the field. Sophomore linebacker Eli McKinney lead the D with five tackles, four assisted tackles, two tackles for losses and four caused fumbles. Tyler King had two tackles and six assisted tackles. John Weber had two tackles and four assists. Dorrance had four assisted tackles and one for a loss. Biery had five assisted tackles, while Goldsberry had one tackle and three assists.
