Pitching dominates Rangers and Thunder
By Ryan Boldrey
It was win one, lose one for Lewis-Palmer Oct. 23 in Aurora at the 4A state softball tournament.
The Rangers (18-5) topped Conifer (16-5) in the first round of the tourney, 2-0, but just a few hours later they were headed home after being no-hit by D’Evyln sophomore Molly Reinke in the quarterfinals.
Reinke struck out 15 Ranger batters on the day, while walking just one as eventual state runner-up D’Eveleyn (21-4) scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth for the 3-0 win.
In the first game LP junior Mariah Peterson was the dominating pitcher, allowing just two hits, while striking out 12 and walking only one. She was also rewarded both RBI on a throwing error in the sixth inning that gave the Rangers all the runs they needed for the win.
“It was a goal all season to come in and at least get past the first game at state,” Peterson said. “So it’s just huge winning it like that.”
Unfortunately for LP they didn’t get any farther this year, but as there are only three seniors on the roster— Emily Bryant, Heather Dettrey and Michelle Mickelson— the future looks bright in Monument.

Discovery Canyon (13-8) gave it all it could, but in the end just getting there proved more than enough.
And despite losing 1-0 to Faith Christian (19-4) on Oct. 23 in Aurora in the first round of the 3A state tournament, head coach Tanya Ramsey was more than pleased that her girls were able to make it as far as they did.
“The emotion that is going through me right now is just amazing,” Ramsey said. “For a first-year varsity program we couldn’t ask for anything more. It’s what we’ve been working on since [practice started on] Aug. 17. We had people coming up to us asking us, ‘who are you,’ and ‘where are you from?’”
By the end of the game anyone who had stopped by the field was more than aware who DCC was.
Freshman centerfielder Shelby Hetzel helped keep the Thunder in the game with a home run saving, fence-crashing catch in the third inning and by throwing out a runner at third base in the sixth, but DCC couldn’t muster more than one hit on offense all morning— a Taryn Mykee single in the first.
And although freshman pitcher Kacee Schroeder, who according to Ramsey has only been pitching for seven months, gave up just three hits all game, Faith Christian’s lone run in the first inning proved all it would need to advance.
“We are building something special here at Discovery Canyon,” Ramsey said. “We have just two starting juniors and we are very freshman and sophomore loaded. We got to taste what it was like this year and we expect to be back.”
