New Monument postmaster crosses ‘Divide’
By Nicole Chillino
Neither blizzards nor rain nor animals in the road can keep Monica Deluca from traveling from Divide to Monument to fulfill her duties at the post office.
Her hard work and steadfast commitment to the office, where she has worked for five years, has paid off.
On Oct. 22, Deluca was installed into the position of postmaster of the Monument Post Office.
“As you know, with every postmaster, you get a free installation,” said postal worker Paul Munk.
Deluca is the ninth person to hold the title of postmaster for the Monument office, he said.
“For centuries, our universal mail system has strengthened the bonds of friendship, family and community,” said Marla Lacy, senior operating manager of post office operations for area 3.
“Today, Monica joins the ranks of such prestigious people as Benjamin Franklin,” she said. Franklin was the first postmaster to be sworn in.
Deluca and her husband moved to Colorado from Florida. He was already in Colorado when she got a call from the Monument postmaster wanting to meet with her and she got the job of supervisor.
She began her career as a carrier, which she did for 25 years, and took part in a supervisor program that opened new managerial doors for her. As a postmaster, she is now in charge of everything and everyone at the Monument Post Office, including taking care of customers’ issues and delegating to employees how to get the mail out regardless of what comes their way.
She said while the job brought her to Monument, the staff and community have kept her at the office.
