County teams start strong in playoffs

The snow didn’t make Rock Canyon break stride.

Through the first two rounds of the Class 4A state high school boys soccer championship playoffs, the defending title-holding Jaguars broke their way into the quarterfinals, despite being interrupted by three days of canceled after-school activities due to snowy weather.

Rock Canyon entered the 4A showdown as the tournament’s No. 6 seed and faced No. 27 Glenwood Springs. The Jaguars advanced to Round 2 with a 2-1 final after goals from Alex Davis and Nick Graybeal. Goalkeeper Jacob Lissek had eight saves for the Jags in that game.

In the second round, Canyon defeated No. 11 Golden Oct. 31, once Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch was playable post-snow storm, with another 2-1 final score. Graybeal had both of the Jaguars’ goals, while Lissek finished with four saves.

With the win, Rock Canyon would advance to the quarterfinals to face No. 3 Cheyenne Mountain Nov. 3. Results of the game were unavailable by press time.

Castle View (4A)

Castle View made a monumental run in the 4A playoffs last season, and they followed up with another run this time around; however, the Sabercats fell short of the quarterfinals round.

The Cats won their first-round game Oct. 27 at Douglas County Schools Stadium as the tournament’s No. 16 seed with a 2-1 final over No. 17 Fort Morgan. Kory Davis and Josh Hilleman had the two goals for View. Cats keeper Sam Peterson finished with five saves.

“Fort Morgan played us very hard [that] night,” Cats coach Eddie Williams said. “They made it a close and scary game for us. Our guys, I felt, controlled the tempo of the game and the majority of the possession, both in the first and second halves.”

Unfortunately for Castle View, and despite seven saves from Peterson, the 4A run ended in Round 2 against No. 1 Broomfield after a 2-0 loss.

“Broomfield controlled much of the possession, but because of our strong defense and marking, didn’t have many clear, good chances on goal,” Williams said. “We were right there with the best competition in the state, and to say that about our guys in only the second year of a varsity program is really saying something. The future looks very solid.”

Ponderosa (5A)

In the Class 5A tournament, Ponderosa was the only team from Douglas County able to get a game off before the winter storm put the tournament on hold for three days. Due to a schedule conflict with Burt.com and the state field hockey semifinals, Colorado High School Activities Association allowed the No. 6 seeded Mustangs to play host to No. 27 Eaglecrest one day early. Ponderosa moved forward with a 2-0 win over the Raptors.

Hayden Wambach and Pat LaPorta scored the two goals for the Mustangs, as goalkeeper Jon Kain had an impressive 10 saves in the first round match up.

Ponderosa advanced to face No. 11 Arapahoe in Round 2 Nov. 3 at Burt.com Stadium in Parker. Results of that game were unavailable by press time.

Chaparral (5A)

Chaparral soccer pulled off an amazing upset in the 5A bracket. As the No. 26 seed, Chaparral defeated No. 7 Pine Creek with a 1-0 clinch Oct. 30 at District 20 Stadium in Colorado Springs. Highlights from the game were not reported.

With the win, the Wolverines advanced to face No. 10 Fairview Nov. 3. Results of the Round 2 match up were unavailable by press time.

Mountain Vista (5A)

Mountain Vista, the 5A tournament’s No. 15 seed, also advanced to Round 2 after a 1-0 win over No. 18 Mountain Range. Highlights from the game were not reported.

In Round 2, Vista faced No. 2 seed Fort Collins Nov. 3. Results of the game were unavailable by press time.

Legend (3A)

In its first varsity season, Legend not only qualified for the Class 3A state showdown but also advanced to its second round. The Titans’ first-round game, as the bracket’s No. 17 seed, was a 1-0 win over No. 16 Frontier Academy.

Shane Hanssler had Legend’s game-winning goal, with Alex Hayes assisting. Goalkeeper Nykola Nyznyk had nine saves for the Titans’ shut out. The win advanced Legend to face No. 1 seed Colorado Springs Christian School Nov. 3. Results of the game were unavailable by press time.
