Authorities in New York are treating the death of a Douglas County woman who had been missing for six years as a homicide.
Remains found north of Albany, N.Y., last week have been identified as belonging to Jennifer M. Hammond, whose last known address was in the Roxborough area. She was 18 when she went missing in 2003.
It is believed Hammond disappeared while selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door in Saratoga County, N.Y. No information has been released about a possible suspect.
“We’re still doing our investigation,” Saratoga County Sheriff James Bowen said Oct. 30. “We’re in the very early stages.”
A hunter found skull fragments and teeth in a wooded area, Bowen said. The teeth were identified through dental records a few days later as belonging to Hammond.
Hammond traveled from Colorado to New York with a group of people working for the magazine-subscription company Atlantic Circulation Inc., the sheriff said.
She was last seen in August of 2003 after being dropped off to solicit subscriptions at a trailer park in Ballston Spa, N.Y., according to a New York State Police Web site. The teen, who was known by some as “Moonbeam,” did not appear at a designated pickup site later that day.
She was reported missing three months later.
Hammond’s belongings were found in an Albany hotel. She had made arrangements for a bus ticket from Albany to Colorado, but the ticket was never picked up, according to the Web site.
