Panther boys heading to state
By Ryan Boldrey
The Panther boys slipped into state with a fifth-place finish at the 4A Region 3 Cross Country Championships Oct. 23 in Falcon, while the girls narrowly missed out on a similar opportunity, placing seventh.
For the second straight week Cripple Creek-Victor senior Shawn Dubbs placed second for the Panthers, crossing behind Castle View junior Chris Ganem. Dubbs finished in a time of 17 minutes, 17 seconds, while Ganem took the tape in a time of 17:10.
“The course was running a bit slow,” said Woodland Park head coach Ron Payton. “Most times were a minute to a minute-and-a-half behind people’s personal bests.”
Rounding out the scoring for the Panther boys behind Dubbs at the regional was Joe Hopfe (19th), Arnie Clarke (22nd), Graham Rhumann (38th) and Nick Elges (52nd). Nate Todd finished just behind Elges in 53rd for the Panthers while Ryan Strauss placed 57th.
Woodland Park finished just six points ahead of Palmer Ridge and 10 ahead of Lewis-Palmer, but as Payton pointed out all five teams ahead of them are ranked in the top seven in 4A.
“I think we can finish in the top 10 at state,” he said. “If we run smarter we could finish even better up there [in Fort Collins].”
The girls team placed right behind the two teams the boys finished ahead of as Lewis-Palmer and Palmer Ridge just edged out the Panthers in a five-six-seven finish.
Winter Spencer was the first to cross for WP, placing 22nd in a time of 22:31, while Cienna Hopkins was right behind her in 23rd, Lindsey Wetzel took 39th, Tarah Todd took 42nd and Annie Woods placed 43rd.
Taylor Lawson and Mariah Rickert also ran for WP, crossing 58th and 60th respectively.
The girls missed the efforts of Kelsey Seibel, who was out due to illness. Siebel has been running No. 2 or 3 for the Panthers this season.
The 4A boys state meet will be run at 11 a.m. Oct. 31 in Fort Collins.
