Pioneer offense powers to 39-18 win over Calhan

Cripple Creek-Victor senior Kyle Tapia sped into the end zone four times on senior day Oct. 24 at CCV, helping carry the Pioneers back to .500 on the season.

Tapia stormed to pay dirt on runs of 8, 3, 35, and 75 yards giving the Calhan Bulldogs all they could handle at 9, 494 feet as he improved his season totals to 1525 yards and 15 TDs.

The Pioneers started off with an 8-yard run by Tapia at 8:51 in the first quarter to put them up 6-0, but Calhan countered with a rushing touchdown of its own to tie the score at 6-6.

CCV quarterback Kyle Hamacher then got into the act next with a 23–yard scoring run to put the Pioneers back on top 12-6. Moments later CCV’s Anthony Lindeberger intercepted a pass which set up Tapia’s second rushing touchdown— a sweep to the sideline— to push the score to 18-6.

Second quarter action saw both CCV and Calhan unable to convert with both teams punting the ball. Pioneer linebacker Reno Loyd sacked Calhan quarterback Clint Hammond for a 9-yard loss in the third quarter to force the Bulldogs to punt once again and fellow linebacker Davin Roach returned the punt to the 35-yard line of Calhan to set up another Tapia rushing touchdown of 35 yards, putting CCV up 24-6 at the end of the third.

The Pioneers offensive surge continued into the fourth quarter with a deep pass from Hamacher to Michael DeCamillo, and a successful two-point conversion put the Pios up 32-6.

CCV safety Ethan Browing then joined the pick party as he intercepted a Bulldog pass to take over at the 14-yard line which sparked a rushing surge that resulted in Tapia’s longest run of the day — a 75-yard touchdown straight up the middle to bring the score to 39-6.

Tapia iced a sore ankle in the final minutes of the game and reflected on his many opportunities and his final 75-yard run of the day.

“The guys were making the blocks and making the holes so I could run through them,” he said. “I had some little problems with my legs cramping, but I pulled through it. Jared Woods, Josh Oxley and Logan Bielz— they all blocked [for me], opening up the hole and I shot through.”

Calhan’s Aaron Ricketts put six more on the board for the Bulldogs with a 75-yard touchdown of his own with 5:40 to go in the fourth, and a final touchdown for the visiting Bulldogs brought the end score to 39-18.

CCV’s Sid Williams tallied a game-high 16 tackles for the Pioneers.

Next up, the Pioneers (4-4, 2-2 1A South Central) will visit Byers (5-3, 2-2) Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. in the regular season finale for both teams.
