Talk about future with students
Trudy Vader
The secondary years are critical transition years for our students. Talk with your secondary student about their dreams, ambitions, and goals for their young adult life after high school.
At Cripple Creek-Victor High School, we are making efforts to assist your child in preparing for a successful post-secondary life. Senior associate director admission officer Sherryl A. Fletcher for John Hopkins University collected from college admission officers the following suggestions to facilitate post secondary conversations with your child:
Listen for what your child enjoys in and outside of the classroom and incorporate those themes into conversations about colleges, vocational certification, apprentice programs and careers.
Encourage your secondary student to build a partnership with his or her school guidance counselors, college and vocational education advisers.
As the difficulty of the secondary school coursework increases, support your child with suggested time management and organizational skills. Encourage your child to continue to set his or her own agenda each day and each week to meet deadlines. Insist on regular school attendance.
Support your secondary student as he or she develops a level of engagement in classroom discussions. Encourage thoughtful participation and conversations with teachers.
Take note of extracurricular activities for which your child has a passion. Investigate opportunities where he or she can expand those talents in the summer months.
Let your secondary student decide which college/vocational school campuses he or she would like to visit. Make sure a visit occurs.
An important part of post-secondary discussion with your child includes encouraging him or her to give his or her best efforts on tests such as CSAP, EXPORE, PLAN and ACT. These tests assist in determining students’ strengths and weaknesses and guide the school in providing for your child’s individual learning needs.
Please remember to attend parent/teacher conferences from 5-7:30 p.m. Oct. 29. A good partnership between students, their parents, and the school leads to our students’ success in school and after graduation.
