Victor Museum stabilization continues

Published: 10.22.09
A second phase of stabilization of the 1899 Victor Lowell Thomas Museum building Victor will begin later this year, thanks to another grant from the State Historical Fund awarded Aug. 1.

The historic fund awarded the museum $194,613 toward continued stabilization of the first floor, which was damaged by a fire in the 1950s. The project, which is estimated at $262,990, also will include restoration of the museum’s second story windows.

Matching funds for the project are being provided by a grant from the Gates Family Foundation and a grant from Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co. Additional matching funds are being provided by five donors sponsoring windows in the museum’s Window Challenge program, and from other private donations and fundraisers.

This is the second historic fund grant for stabilization the museum has received. The first grant stabilized a bulging north wall, a south foundation and funded removal of the fire-damaged timbers. That grant was completed in early July 2009.

The State Historical Fund was created by the 1990 constitutional amendment allowing limited gaming in the towns of Cripple Creek, Central City and Black Hawk. The amendment directs that a portion of the gaming tax revenues be used for historic preservation throughout the state. Funds are distributed through a competitive process, and all projects must demonstrate strong public benefit and community support.

The museum is planning to seek more grants this fall to stabilize the second story and restore the storefront of the museum. Community support for the museum project is important to the grant process.

Besides a variety of successful fundraisers, the museum board also started a Window Challenge to raise funds for the window restoration. A $1,300 donation enables a window to be restored, and the donor’s name is placed on a plaque near the window.

After Labor Day the museum will be open weekends through Oct. 11.
