Colorado Public Health advises sick to stay home
State health officials urge all persons with mild flu-like illness to stay home. Children and adolescents with fever should not go to day care or school. Adults with fever should not go to work until their fever has gone away for 24 hours (without use of fever-reducing medicine).
Individuals with severe illness, such as difficulty breathing, should contact their healthcare provider. Schools, businesses and other organizations are urged to plan for the flu.
To decrease chances of getting or spreading the flu, the department recommends taking steps to avoid the flu.
Again, this is a rapidly evolving situation and the state health department is asking people to be alert for changes in our guidance, available from this page.
H1N1 Vaccine Status (Updated 10/13/09)
Shipments of 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine are beginning to arrive in Colorado. Initial doses are being used to vaccinate healthcare workers with direct patient contact. This site, http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/epr/H1N1.html, will be updated as this vaccine becomes available to other population segments.
Avoiding the flu
Get a seasonal vaccination and H1N1 vaccinations when vaccine is available. Find a flu clinic at http://www.immunizecolorado.com
Wash hands frequently with soap and water (use anti-bacterial gel if soap and water are not available).
Remember to scrub while you wash (friction is important to the cleaning process). If you can sing “Happy Birthday” twice during your cleaning session you’re spending the right amount of time cleaning your hands.
Cover your sneezes and coughs with a tissue or your elbow.
Avoid others with respiratory illnesses.
Unless it’s an emergency, call a health care provider about your flu-like symptoms. The best option may be to stay home until your illness has resolved itself instead of seeing your provider.
