Colorful book features local byway

From the Dinosaur Diamond Trail and the Trail of the Ancients on the Colorado Plateau to the Pawnee Pioneer and Santa Fe trails on the Eastern Plain, Colorado’s Byways live up to their name as “scenic.”

There are 25 Colorado Scenic Byways, 10 of which are part of the National Scenic Byways Program. Each of these 25 byways are photographed by Jin Steinberg and explored in prose by Susan Tweit in the two-volume set that includes “Colorado Scenic Byways —Taking the Other Road,” and “Colorado Scenic Byways — Road Atlas & Travel Guide.”

The author and photographer will be on hand for a presentation and to sign copies of the book 5-8 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Woodland Park Public Library. The book signing is sponsored by Teller Historic and Environmental Coalition and boxed sets will be available at a discount.

Proceeds from this event will be used to further the coalition’s mission to preserve and broaden the public’s understanding of the historic, cultural, environmental, recreational and scenic resources in and around Teller County.

Steinberg’s photography brings out the scenic beauty in wildflower strewn prairies and snowcapped mountains with both natural wonders and historic towns. Tweit’s text is both poetic and informative.

Teller and Fremont counties have their own byway, the Gold Belt Tour that goes from Florissant to Florence with three choices of route — completely paved High Park Road and the unpaved Shelf and Phantom Canyon roads. The big book of photos puts the tour in its best light while the road atlas and travel guide has the what-to-see, when-to-go information and the route histories.

Residents who drive these routes weekly or even daily might not know all there is to know about them or even that they driving on part of the National Scenic Byway system unless they notice the signs put up by the Bureau of Land Management.

Of course, there are other scenic byways that are worth the effort of seeking out, especially when people are taking vacations close to home. The closest of these are the Frontier Pathways from Pueblo to Colorado City, with a side trip to Westcliffe, and the Collegiate Peaks and Top of the Rockies trails from Salida to Minturn, with side trips to Aspen and Copper Mountain.

Farther away but well worth the drive is the Santa Fe Trail that follows U.S. 50, U.S. 350 and Interstate 25 from the Kansas line to the New Mexico line. Spring is the best time to take this tour — after the snow but before the heat.

For those drawn to Native American culture and history, the Trail of the Ancients in the Four Corners Area is the tour to take. The driving time on the byway is three hours but it can easily become a weekend or longer if travelers stop at museums, heritage centers, festivals and Mesa Verde National Monument.

“Colorado Scenic Byways, Taking the Other Road” was chosen as the 2008 National Travel Book by ForeWord Magazine and received the Colorado Book Award in 2009.

An interview with THE Coalition Vice Chair Dave Martinek and coalition member Nancy Desilets will air on Teller Life at TellerNetcast.com in the 10 a.m. hour Nov. 5.
