Serving everywhere

Friends and family know her as the gal who is in a plethora of organizations.
In addition to co-owning Rapid Lube, Carol Selby volunteers at Choices Pregnancy Center, Woodland Park Christian Church and the Chamber of Commerce.
She substitutes for Champions and participates in business groups, including Wiz Bang and Christian Business Lunch. She also spends time with the Above the Clouds Car Show and supports a variety of nonprofit organizations.
“My husband says I’m involved in everything,” Selby said.
In 2000, Selby and her husband, Gary, sold their business of 30 years. Gary’s Gardening was a successful California landscaping company, but the Selbys were ready to move on. Instead of settling down to retirement, they bought a motor home and started travelling across the United States.
For five years they spent time in almost every state in the country.
“We had a map on the door to keep track of all the places we visited. If we didn’t spend the night there or buy something there, we didn’t count it,” Selby said.
During their travels they stopped at a friend’s house in Colorado Springs. Their friend insisted that they include a certain little mountain town on their trip. One visit to Woodland Park and they knew they would be coming back.
Four years ago, they completed their massive road trip by moving to their new home.
Their previous success in business empowered them to purchase the Rapid Lube on Hwy 67 in 2008. Carol handles the advertising, marketing, and paperwork while Gary spends his time in the shop.
“He has always been into cars,” Carol Selby said. “Even in this economy people need to get oil changes. We are fortunate. This has been a good business to get into.”
Carol Selby uses her business as an opportunity to serve others.
“I like to help out other businesses and get the word out about things that are available,” she said.
To accomplish this, Carol Selby volunteers as the ambassador of membership retention with the Woodland Park Chamber of Commerce. She actively communicates with chamber members to make sure they know all the services that are available to them.
She uses the Web site www.woodlandparkchamber.com to direct people to resources such as the community calendar, the After Hours networking parties, the Lunch and Learn business lessons, ribbon cuttings, advertising in the Grapevine and more.
Carol Selby also participates in Wiz Bang and Christian Business Lunches. Wiz Bang is a free business class offered by Park State Bank. And CBL is a networking group of small business owners sharing ideas for success.
Gary and Carol Selby have also used their success in business to sponsor local nonprofits. They have supported Community Partnership, Pikes Peak Regional Hospital, Choices Pregnancy Center, Teller County Animal Shelter, and Woodland Park High School.
Carol’s vision is consistent even with her involvement with Above the Clouds Car Show.
“Most of the money we raise during the summer show goes to nonprofits, knowing that makes me feel proud to be a part of it,” she said.
When she does not have her fingers in the business world, Carol Selby devotes her time to small children. She has taught preschool for many years and currently volunteers as a Sunday school teacher for Woodland Park Christian Church.
Carol also substitute teaches at Champions before and after school program in Divide.
Her primary volunteer activity is praying for the families at Choices Pregnancy Center. Carol Selby meets with a prayer group monthly and receives other prayer requests in between. She also fills in as a chaperone for ultrasounds, someone to hang decorations, or wherever she is needed.
“I’m a real baby lover,” Carol Selby said. “The program at Choices offers a lot of different services. There is such a great atmosphere, no false pretenses. They are just there to help.”
Lucky for the Woodland Park, Carol Selby is a people person. Whether it’s through business networking, financial donations, or prayer, she gets out there and shares her heart with the community.
