Merchants team up to get business rolling
By Pat Hill
In a team effort to boost sales in Woodland Park, several business owners are meeting regularly to add oomph to their marketing plans. Guided by the Whiz Bang Retail Mastery System, a series of videos, the group considers collective marketing and the team approach as keys to success.
Among the ideas gleaned from the videos are the specials and discounts offered on the first weekend of the month, coupons that offer dollars-off on a price tag and introductory e-mails sent to new business owners.
The discount event, “Woodland Weekends” is sponsored by Woodland Retail Alliance, many of whose members are part of the Whiz Bang group.
As an example of the team spirit invoked by the merchants, most of them do “endorsed marketing,” which is attaching a coupon or gift card for another business through e-mails to new customers.
The team spirit shines through on events that begin at the end of November and run through Dec. 21, promotion ideas gained from the mastery system videos.
The holiday events kick off with the Day of Giving on Nov. 28, when participating merchants donate 1 percent of their sales to a nonprofit. This year’s recipient is Charitable Treasures Workshop, which offers employment opportunities to developmentally-disabled young adults.
The holiday events include shopping and dining promotions by the participating merchants.
The big day, however, is Dec. 5, which begins with the Kiwanis-sponsored Breakfast with Santa, followed by the Holiday Home Tour and the parade that evening.
While there is no charge to check out and learn about the mastery system, the group is puzzled at the lackluster response to the Whiz Bang meetings. For Carol Selby, co-owner of Rapid Lube, the system has been helpful. “You know some of these things but you don’t always remember to do them,” she said.
The mastery system videos are titled: Inventory Management, Selling, Assortment Planning and Buying, Store Operations, Customer Service, Personal Business Skills and Visual Merchandising. Park State Bank & Trust bought the mastery system and has made the videos available to area merchants.
The meetings are an effort to energize the Woodland Park merchants to work together as a team. The next meeting is at 7:25 a.m. Nov. 3 at the bank. For information, call 719-687-9234 x 150.
