Vacancies need filling on planning commission

Partners in Philanthropy honor local contributions
Awards were presented at the 10th Annual Partners in Philanthropy luncheon Oct. 14 to honor local organizations and individuals for their extraordinary philanthropic contributions in five categories.
More than 260 local philanthropists came together at the Broadmoor Hotel to celebrate the community’s outstanding philanthropists. The award-winners were nominated based on their volunteer and financial support of nonprofit organizations in the Colorado Springs community.
Outstanding Campaign Fundraising Volunteer
Tom Naughton was nominated by Pikes Peak United Way for his many years of commitment to numerous nonprofits in the region.
Naughton has volunteered on and led the boards and various committees of diverse community organizations including Pike Peak United Way, YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Goodwill Industries, and Community Partnership for Child Development. In each he has not only excelled as a fundraiser, but also as an ambassador and community leader.
Outstanding Corporate Philanthropic Program (More than 250 employees)
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co. was nominated by Pikes Peak Regional Medical Center and the Economic & Downtown Development Department for the City of Woodland Park.
In addition to playing a major role in Woodland Park’s Mainstreet Makeover, the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co. has provided annual support to Parks & Recreation programs in Woodland Park, Cripple Creek, and Canon City. It pays rent on the Victor Community Center, and it took a lead role in the Pikes Peak Regional Medical Center.
In addition, in the past 10 years company employees have donated more than 45,000 hours of volunteer work to more than 50 community organization. As the largest employer in Teller County, the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co. has created a company culture of giving back, truly making its communities better places for its workers and all who live in the region.
Outstanding Corporate Philanthropic Program (Less than 250 employees)
Bristol Brewing Co. was nominated by the Bee Vradenburg Foundation for the innovative ways it partners with nonprofit organizations. While it has 12 full-time employees, Bristol dedicates one full-time position to working directly with community nonprofits on festivals and special events. In addition, all those who work the taps for Bristol at events are volunteers.
Last year all proceeds from Bristol’s specially brewed community ales were donated to three nonprofits — Friends of the Cheyenne Canon, Friends of the Fountain, and Venetucci Farm — but throughout the year its philanthropy benefits many more including KRCC, COPPeR, Theatreworks, and the Trails and Open Space Coalition.
Since opening in 1994, Bristol Brewing Co. has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the community.
Outstanding Grantmaking Organization
The Leighty Foundation was nominated by Leadership Pikes Peak. In recent years the Leighty Foundation has supported more than 57 nonprofit organizations. In addition to its financial contributions, the foundation has assisted organizations with capacity building strategies, such as development of volunteer programs, the use of matching donations to start or give momentum to fundraising campaigns, and support for executive and staff development.
Jane Leighty Justis, trustee and executive director of the foundation, has trained hundreds of foundation trustees and staff at conferences, workshop, and seminars. The Leighty Foundation exemplifies how a small family foundation can make a leadership impact on the community and is a role model for family foundation philanthropy.
Outstanding Individual Donor
Chuck Murphy was nominated by Catholic Charities of Colorado Springs for his longstanding commitment to nonprofits in the Pikes Peak region. His support goes far beyond financial to include his time and expertise, not to mention his passion. One of his greatest contributions recently to the community has been the new Marian House.
He serves on six boards of directors but has served on numerous boards and committees over the years, and the results of his tireless labor are evident throughout the community. Through the personal gifts of Chuck and his wife, Mary Lou, the Colorado Springs community is a better place to live.
The Partners in Philanthropy luncheon was sponsored by the Center for Nonprofit Excellence, the Pikes Peak Community Foundation, Pikes Peak United Way, and the Pikes Peak Funders Forum.
