Art show draws almost 80 entries

Almost 80 works of art adorned walls and panels at Hampden Hall for the Oct. 13 opening of Englewood Art Exhibit .

This marks the fourth year for the Englewood Parks and Recreation Department-sponsored art show and this marked a record number of entries.

The event is held each year to offer those who take up art as a hobby to put their work on display for public viewing.

Just like their point of view, the ages of the artists varied as there were works by four clients of the Johnson Senior Day Care Center on display along with works from at least one high school student.

The reception also featured a live demonstration as artist Brad Sharp created a watercolor portrait.

As people gathered around to watch him work, he said he was an avid painter as a youngster but put art on the back burner as corporate life interrupted for about 30 years.

“I just picked it up again now that I have some time on my hands,” he said. “It took a steep relearning curve at first but it is sort of like riding a bike, you never really forget what you learned about being a painter.”

Artists used a variety of mediums including oils, acrylics, Brazilian Embroidery, Bunka Embroidery and mixed media.

There were portraits, landscapes and fantasies as each artist selected the subject for his or her art.

Many artworks depicted flowers. For example Bobbye Donahue’s subject was the iris and she said she decided to paint that picture because she loves the shape, color and grace of the flower and its blooms.

“I have been painting and drawing since I was a child. I was that unusual child who wanted gifts of art supplies instead of dolls,” she said. “I majored in art in college and now, art is my way to relax and enjoy myself.

A short distance away, Seiji Hewson’s pencil sketch was on display.

“I just sought to draw images that expressed the chaos in the world today,” the Colorado’s Finest Alternative High School student said. “Pencil has always been my preferred medium and really feel the black and white of pencil gives strong expression to emotions. However, I am now beginning to experiment with other mediums.”

He said he grew up surrounded by art and artists since his dad is a tattoo artist and his grandmother, who is in her 80s, still paints abstracts.

“So, I can’t remember when I didn’t draw,” he said. “When I graduate from high school, I would like to go to Metropolitan State University with a goal of possibly learning more about artistic use of computers and eventually become a graphic designer.”

Tom Wullstein, who is a professional floor covering installer, used talents he developed in his profession as he uses putty knives and epoxy to spread sand colored with elements such as copper and mother of pearl to create the picture on travertine, a marble-like stone.

“I used to make jewelry boxes out of marble and soap stone using epoxy and I found how well you could use ground up stone to smooth out the seams and make them look nice. I thought maybe it would be something I could do to create landscapes. I am used to working with tiles and I found out that, if you make a mistake, you just quickly scrape off the epoxy, discard it and start over,” Wullstein said. “I use the travertine like a canvas and mix the materials into the epoxy and spread it around. In the sunset, I used crushed coal for the palm trees and, go give it a sparkle, I mixed in ground-up mother of pearl.”
