HRCA goes solar
By Robyn Lydick
The Highlands Ranch Community Association has approved two more solar installations. Its own.
A 25-kilowatt system will be split between Eastridge and Westridge recreation centers.
The system size is related to limitations on Xcel Energy rebates.
Standard Renewable Energy, in Boulder, will install the panels for $139,059. With rebates through Xcel Energy, the community association will pay a net total of $51,609, or roughly 37 percent of the cost.
The panels are more for education than power generation, according to Ken Joseph, facilities manager for the association.
Display panels inside will show visitors in real time the generation at any given time.
Joseph expects the panels will produce a small percentage of the electricity needed for the centers.
The proposal came before the recreation advisory committee June 16. When the board of directors took up the topic, questions about insurance on the panels, and concerns that additional insurance would be required, led directors to table the topic until the questions could be answered.
In July, the board passed the request.
