Green company enjoys wave of eco-success

What started as a horticulturist with a vision has grown into an eco-friendly enterprise that could make petroleum-based fertilizer producers “green” with envy.

Bio Green, a fast-moving company that opened a franchise in Castle Rock last month, could potentially have homeowners, cities and farmers using less water and spending less to grow more.

Studies have shown that the liquid mixture of “biobased” compounds, including renewable domestic plant material and sea kelp, efficiently helps lawns, trees, shrubs, ornamental flowers and vegetable gardens become more healthy and vibrant. Bio Green corrects soil deficiencies by replenishing carbon to the soil, provides crucial nutrients and enables plant roots to reach deeper into the ground, reducing water by as much as one-third, said Milton Dailey, general manager of the Castle Rock operation.

The product has received more recognition in recent months as a solid alternative to petroleum fertilizers, which are costly and harmful to the environment. In fact, the Nevada-based company has partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency because of numerous studies that have proven its lack of impact on the environment. It is participating in the United States Department of Agriculture’s BioPreferred program as a bio fertilizer source for federal agencies. The formula is already being used on the Capitol Building lawn in Washington, D.C. and throughout Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Bio Green, founded by horticulturist John Perry, has enjoyed much success because of green-focused movements, including those backed by the federal government, and the growing public desire to reduce pollution. Colorado, in particular, has received widespread attention for being a potential hub for alternative energy and environmentally-geared businesses.

Bio Green has already gained the attention of commercial farm operations, and Castle Rock franchise representatives are in talks with some northern Colorado farmers about using the product on a large scale.

“They have had tough time with price of fuel,” Dailey said. “If they can get more yield and cheaper fertilizer that’s all green, it’s a good situation.”

According to Dailey, the eco-friendly fertilizer also has the ability to re-grow grass on brown spots left by pets, nourish ailing trees and shrubs back to health, and reduce water consumption among cities and homeowner’s associations responsible for maintaining hundreds of acres of landscaping. Dailey is hoping to establish a relationship with Castle Rock’s town government to explore what benefits, if any, the town could stand to gain.

Dailey expects the company to grow quickly, mostly from word-of-mouth. It costs homeowners about $35 per application for a 3,000-square-foot yard. Bio Green is applied three times a year: once in the spring, once in mid-summer and again in the fall.

“Once people see the benefits and what its doing and the price it can be applied for, it’s going to be huge,” he said, adding the fertilizer might be popular among golf courses as well.

Dailey visited a golf course to witness the results for himself before buying franchising rights to Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. He expects to have two Bio Green trucks in every county on the Front Range within a year. Of course, that means job creation at a time when stable employment is at a premium.

An added benefit – one that would become one of the largest environmental projects in state history – could be Bio Green’s affect on bugs. Dailey said Colorado officials are evaluating the potential of using the formula to drive destructive pine beetles from the trees. Pine beetles are responsible for killing millions of acres of trees throughout the state. One big question still lingering is the cost-effectiveness of such an undertaking.

Bio Green might also catch on with homeowners who want to save dying trees, and therefore, maintain amenities that add value to a home.
