Former home builder spouts efficiency 101

Kimball Bailey will tell you he started building energy efficient houses long before it became a trend.

During the last 20 years, he’s constructed more than 40 homes, along with numerous remodels and retrofits.

Instead of building houses, Bailey is now traveling around the area educating people on how to green their own homes.

This summer, Bailey will conduct his workshops — The Road Map to Home Energy Efficiency — once a week from 7-9 p.m. at the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce, 6840 S. University Blvd.

“People are overwhelmed with information,” Bailey said from his home near Bailey, CO.

His goal is to condense his knowledge and experience into a simple straight-forward message to share with homeowners desiring a more sustainable living environment.

The workshops cover everything from making a simply more comfortable and efficient home, to a net zero energy residence.

“Most of this can be done without a professional,” Bailey said.

This is also what he tells homeowners at the start of his workshop.

Programming thermostats, changing fire dampers and drapes, installing low-flow faucets and running cold water for laundry are some of his suggestions.

“People don’t know this,” he said reiterating his goal of simplifying information.

Bailey’s next big selling point is an energy audit. He believes that no homeowner can begin to think about energy efficiency without an audit to expose the trouble spots.

“You don’t know how your house is performing until you conduct an audit,” he said.

And he’ll provide any attendee with a comprehensive resource list, which as all the local service and product providers in the area.

The Road Map to Energy Efficiency workshops also touches on new construction, whether it is from the ground-up or on an existing home incorporating energy upgrades.

Health issues, the realities of solar electric, thermal and wind power and using these to be home energy producers also are topics of discussion.

Finally, he’ll explain many of the rebates and tax credits available for energy upgrades. And they are substantial. A question and answer session will follow the workshop.

“It’s amazing the kind of credits energy companies provide,” he said. “People should know about what’s available to them.”
