New mayor, trustee in town
By Nicole Chillino
Monument welcomed a new trustee and appointed a trustee to the position of mayor July 6.
Trustee Travis Easton was unanimously chosen to be the town’s interim mayor after receiving former mayor Byron Glenn’s formal resignation at its meeting. Easton was considered by the trustees to be the best candidate since he had been attending many meetings of outside organizations that Glenn had been going to and had spent a lot of time working with the former mayor the past few years.
“I think his name is getting to be well-known and respected in the Pikes Peak area,” said trustee Tommie Plank.
In addition to filling the mayoral role, the board appointed a new trustee to fill the vacancy left by trustee Steve Samuels in May. Rick Squires was appointed by the board to serve as a trustee. Both Squires and Easton will need to run in the April 2010 election to retain their positions, said town clerk Scott Meszaros.
Squires has been a Monument resident since 1983. In the past 26 years, he has served on several town committees including the planning commission, police department building committee and architecture committee.
He said the objective of the police department building committee was to secure funding for a new facility, which it achieved when a funding mechanism was placed on the ballot and passed in 2005. He did not, however, feel serving on the planning commission was as rewarding.
“I don’t think the town, at that point, was on the same page,” he said. When he was on the committee, he said it felt like the commission did not have any authority over the planning-related decisions made in the town.
Squires said with the number of annexations the trustees have approved, the town is capable of asking to hire more staff. He said he understands the town might need more police officers or street plowers, but he would not necessarily want the town to increase the number of administrators it employs.
He said the town is doing a good job of maintaining the continuity of its staff. From what he has seen, Squires said it appears the town staff is content, which he said is a measure of the management of the town since he knows the town does not pay as much as some other municipalities.
Squires was chosen by the trustees by secret ballot.
The trustees are anticipating selecting another trustee to fill the vacancy created by Easton’s movement to the mayoral position and Glenn’s departure at its Aug. 3 meeting. The position will expire in April 2010 unless the appointee is, at that time, elected to serve a full term on the board.
Those interested in the position may contact town manager Cathy Green at 719-884-8013. Applications are due at noon July 29.
