Coffee Cup Café encounters fire

At 5:45 p.m. on June 30, three separate fire departments responded to a call from the Monument Police Department that the Coffee Cup Café at 251 Front St. in Monument had caught fire.

According to Tri-Lakes Fire Chief Robert Denboske the 18 firefighters representing Tri-Lakes-Monument, Westcott and Palmer Lake were able to contain the fire within five minutes.

“The first arriving units found fire through the roof, and as the investigation pursued it came out to be that the venting unit on the roof seems to have been the cause,” Denboske said. “The damage came from the top down, not the bottom up. As far as damage I cannot give an estimate on that, but there were no injuries.”

All employees of the café had reportedly left for the day at approximately 4:45 p.m.

Wendy Diggins and husband Jeremy own the Coffee Cup. Wendy Diggins said the insurance company and fire investigation findings could not pinpoint the exact cause of the fire, just that it began near the roof and inside of the kitchen’s hood. She said the insurance company estimated the restaurant would be closed for at least three months and could be out of business for as many as six months.

Diggins said the restaurant had substantial water damage and a hole in the roof created by the firefighters in order to ensure the fire wasn’t spreading would have to be fixed.

“The fire itself didn’t do a large amount of damage, though,” Wendy Diggins said, crediting the restaurants fire suppression system. “We are fortunate it happened during the time of day it did. Had it happened at 2 or 3 in the morning, I think the whole building would have been lost.”

Denboske noted that the building has been one of concern to the department due to its age and wood structure.

“The power will remain off in the Coffee Cup Café as well as the gas and electricity as we will have to do another search in the morning,” he said.

All adjacent buildings in the strip will have their power up and running.

As for reopening, Wendy Diggins said she didn’t have a date in mind yet, but said she and her husband are fortunate to have a second business, the Second Cup at 13860 Gleneagle Drive, to help provide work for some of their displaced workers during reconstruction.

“We’ll do our best to shift some people around,” she said.
