Free yoga offered
By Robyn Lydick
Garuda asana. Sun pose. Focused breath.
If this is close to a foreign tongue for you, head to Civic Green Park on Wednesday and Saturday mornings at 8:15 a.m. to stretch your body and your mind with free yoga.
Nancy Levinson, of Namastè YogaWorks + Wellness, guides people through a basic gentle workout.
She sees her classes as a gift to her community.
“This is my favorite park,” Levinson said. “I love the Om stone. This park is a blessing.”
The Om stone takes any sound made by a person and broadcasts it to the entire park. It is part of the sensory garden at Civic Green.
As a crowd of about 40 people laid their mats in the damp grass, Levinson starts on the workout.
“It’s a nice warm morning,” she tells the participants. “We have had some mornings where we were freezing.”
In the crowd are several yoga newbies, some at their first class ever, but the workout was so smooth it was hard to distinguish between the first timers and the visiting instructors.
“Palms up is a receiving position,” Levinson told the group. “This means you are ready to receive the energy of the earth. Palms down is sealing the energy for channeling within yourself.”
She goes on to lead the group through some poses, all with an awareness of each practitioner’s breathing.
Free yoga runs through Aug. 19 with the exception of July 4 and 11. The classes start at 8:15 a.m. and last one hour. They are for ages 18 and over. Bring a mat, water bottle and sunscreen.
For more information, call the Metro District at 303-791-2710.
