Outdoor preferences lead to new franchise

Terri Hayes was living in England when she met her fiancé Paul Jeffrey. The many things they had in common were a profound love for outdoor activities: motorcycles, camping, mountain biking and hiking. Jeffrey had spent several weeks in Colorado during military training, and suggested to Terri that Colorado would be a great place that would fulfill their outdoor passions. From England they chose to relocate to Colorado.

Once settled in Black Forest, Hayes began to look for a part-time job to ease back into the workplace; a job specifically for educated people. None existed, or she was unable to find it, so she opted to continue working on her master’s concerning non-profits through the University of Maryland.

While reading a newspaper story about Sarah Palin, the writer made reference to a company named 10 til 2 that specialized in placing college-educated professionals into long-term, part-time positions.

Upon researching the Internet, she found that the corporate office for 10 til 2 was located in Aurora, and it had been in business for more than five years, with franchising starting more than three years ago. “I liked what I saw and the opportunity afforded by the franchise,” Hayes said.

She purchased a franchise in November, and with training and all the requirements of a new business, she was ready for clients by February.

“The business strategy for the first six months is to let businesses know that I exist,” she said. “Its all about networking, building relations and social media.”

She took the opportunity to introduce her new company at the Business Expo sponsored by the Colorado Springs Chamber at the Phil Long Center.

“Not only did I have hundreds of new faces coming through the expo, I had 200 new contacts guaranteed by virtue of fellow exhibitors.

“Even in this economy, our business plan is on target,” Hayes said.

Geographically her company handles Castle Rock to Pueblo.

What makes 10 til 2 unique is that the requirement for all placements is a minimum of one year of college. “Actually, 90 percent of our candidates have a four year degree,” Hayes said.

“Part-time employees are hard workers, dedicated to the job because being part-time they have time for personal calls and errands on their own time,” Hayes said, adding that allows them to be more productive while actually at work.

“We handle the client’s human resource needs by providing advertising, resume selection and screenings, schedule interviews, reference checks, and sending the top two or three candidates for the employer to interview.

“We save the employer money and time by handling all aspects of the payroll.”

Industry needs vary, as a provider of part-time help the hours vary from a minimum of four hours to a maximum of 36 hours per week.

The 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. time slot is the most common timeframe help is needed as it traditionally covers the lunch period.

The benefits to employees working through 10 til 2 are flexible hours, income and job fulfillment, she said.

The benefits to businesses are flexibility, paying for employees for the time they’re needed, reduced overhead cost as no benefits are paid, and a pool of workers in reserve to provide services as needed.

“I can also place people in offices based out of homes,” Hayes said.

“We call it part-time … our clients call it perfect,” is the trademark slogan of the company.
