Two-week light rail closure forecast

The Regional Transportation District announced Jan. 20 that repairs to the Southwest Corridor Light Rail Line caused by the freight train derailment will take about two weeks. RTD also announced the shuttle buses will operate to and from the Oxford station and no longer continue to the Englewood station.
Southwest Corridor trains were halted after the Jan. 16 derailment that happened at the south end of the Downtown Littleton station platform. Scott Reed, RTD spokesman, said the derailed cars caused damage to the foundation of the northbound light rail tracks and buckles some track sections.
He said crews began work Jan. 20. They will have to remove several hundred feet of dirt and concrete retaining wall panels adjacent to the northbound light rail track, repair the track foundation, replace the dirt and wall panels then replace the track sections.
He emphasized that the repair-time estimate is preliminary and RTD will announce a date for resumption of full Southwest Corridor Light Rail Line service as soon as it becomes available.
