Lending a healing hand
By Holly Cook
In the fourth century B.C., Socrates warned against treating only one part of the body "for the part can never be well unless the whole is well."
As a certified hypnotherapist, Reiki master, and now founder of Awakened Spirit Holistic Healing Center in Littleton, Michelle Alleman helps patients achieve what Socrates was talking about.
Alleman describes herself as "having always been in the business of helping people."
"Our goal at Awakened Spirit is to help you discover that everything you need is within yourself, and that you have the power to move forward," Alleman said. "Holistic Healing assists every part of a person's life, bringing balance to the entire person — body, mind and spirit."
Holistic healing is an ancient science that originated in India and China, dating back at least 5,000 years. It describes therapies that treat the person as a whole, taking into account the person's overall physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well being before recommending traditional medicines, treatments, and health care.
While the people of China and India have been relying on natural healing powers for thousands of years, the industry is just now making a comeback.
“Most of the people who seek holistic medicine have been diagnosed by their primary care physician, but are simply sick of treating symptoms with drugs and not treating the root of the problem,” Alleman said.
At Awakened Spirit, Alleman's eight therapists practice different treatments ranging from acupuncture to reiki; from hypnotherapy to herbal therapy.
Andrea Crowell, treats her patients by reducing stress and promoting relaxation with a Japanese technique called Reiki. It is an ancient "laying-on" of hands healing technique that uses life force energy to heal, balancing the subtle energies within the body. A Reiki practitioner serves as a vessel that supplies healing energies where they are most needed-using little to no touch.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words — Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power," and Ki which is "life force energy." So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy," Crowell said.
Crowell, who spent many years as in IT specialist with day-to-day extreme stress, decided that there had to be a better way of life. After studying essential oils and herbs, she became a Clinical aromatherapist and master herbalist, as well as a reiki master.
Like their patients who are looking for an alternative remedy for healthier lives, all of Alleman's practitioners came to the center looking for an alternative career.
After spending many years as a registered nurse and occupational therapist, Mitzi Cagle left that world due to regulations.
"You can't tell me how to treat people, when to treat people," she said. "Everyone is in a different place, with different environments, families, history."
Cagle uses the sound and vibrations of Tibetan brass bowls, along with massage therapy to heal.
Awakened Spirit Holistic Healing Center also offers acupuncture, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy, as well as a series of classes offered by a resident intuitive and nutritionist.
