Lone Tree youth leaders begin work
By Michele Sample
Lone Tree will soon have seven new members appointed to the inaugural Youth Commission.
According to Kristen Romary, community outreach coordinator for the City of Lone Tree, 11 applications were submitted for these positions.
Criteria for being accepted included enrollment in eighth through 12th grades, with primary residence to be in the City of Lone Tree. As the foundational Youth Commission, members will create their mission statement, write their own bylaws, establish programs and enhance city services, while learning about local government and becoming active in the community.
The seven appointed individuals will serve in an advisory capacity to the Lone Tree City Council, much like other boards and commissions within the city. They will be able to present suggestions to city council, plan Lone Tree events and make important decisions regarding issues that affect local teens, according to the city’s Web site.
“When I started this position, this idea was part of my job description, to get this ball rolling,” Romary said. “The idea originated from the city council. They were excited to get youth involved.”
Two city councilmembers, Jackie Millet and Sharon VanRamshorst, conducted the interviews and will bring the rest of the council to a two-day retreat in Colorado Springs. Also attending the retreat will be city managers, department heads and the rest of the city council.
“I’m anticipating that the formal decision, once presented to the rest of the council will be made at the retreat,” Romary said.
