Relationships forged through giving

The 2008 Santa Sharing Program at Douglas/Elbert Task Force was successful this past year, according to executive director Suzanne Green.
About 180 families in need throughout Douglas County were given gifts, food and companionship over the holidays. People in the community willing to donate their time, money and resources were matched up with clients going through hard financial times.
“We hope through this program, relationships develop,” Green said.
An e-mail that came to Green from a supportive family involved in the task force over the holidays confirmed a relationship had definitely blossomed from volunteering.
The e-mail read, “We were able to visit with the family prior to Christmas and the mom and I maintained an e-mail communication throughout the holidays and after. What a remarkable family with beautiful children. I couldn’t be around them without weeping as I was so touched by their devotion to their children, their simple requests and their gracious spirits.”
Green said that donations for their food banks are up right now, but the months of January through March are traditionally low. During this past festive season, typically the food bank donates five days of food, but because of the generosity of the community, the task force was able to give more of a supply this year.
As people were calling before the holidays with questions of how to help, Green said she asked if some would conduct food drives during those weaker months of January, February and March.
The Douglas/Elbert Task Force mission is to meet the immediate needs of residents of Douglas and Elbert counties who are in financial distress and at risk of becoming homeless, and to help them work through troublesome times with dignity.
“We have seen our thrift store donations dry up a little, so I want to remind people it is a great place to shop, and of course the money spent goes back into the community.”
