Indians look to rebound

The Kiowa boys basketball team’s recent loss boiled down to one thing: rebounding. Well, actually, lack of rebounding, according to head coach Eli Moore.

The Indians lost 63-52 to the Lutheran-Parker Lions Jan. 10 on their home court, dropping their record to 5-3.

The interesting part about the loss is the fact that the team’s No. 1 focus is hitting the boards after every shot, working to out-rebound each team they face. Moore said the reason rebounding, which he considers one of the team’s biggest strengths, is so important is because it does not allow other teams to put up second and third shots.

Moore said he is fairly disappointed with the team’s performance, but said the team can learn something from very game.

“It came down to rebounding, plain and simple,” he said. “That is the main thing we emphasize and we didn’t do it.”

But Moore is sure the team will be able to learn from its mistakes after watching film, or by experiencing some bench time. Before the game, Moore said he will sit players who do not rebound, and he stuck to his word, benching the five starters during the fourth quarter.

“I told the starters to start boxing out, and they still played lackadaisically, so I sat them for a few minutes,” he said. “I needed to send a message to the team.”

The team also is working on some new techniques this season to broaden their playing skills by including a full-court press in games. In the past the team has typically used a half-court press defensively, but Moore said with the team’s speed and athleticism, the full-court press can be successful.

Although the Indians had a rough game, Moore said the team this year has the potential to go all the way to the state tournament. The team has improved over the last three years in shooting from the outside, rebounding and the fast-break game. With seven seniors including three standout players, Zack Young, Dan Sewald and Cody Miller, who all score double digits in almost every game, and the desire to win, the Indians’ shot at state may not be too far off.

“We have what it takes talent-wise and depth-wise to really go far this season,” he said.

The Indians’ next game is away at Evangelical Christain Academy on Jan. 16, and then they will have a home game Jan. 17 against Simla.
