City encourages residents to shop local

In a move to make more consumers aware of the economic value of supporting local businesses, the City of Centennial is launching a shop local campaign for 2009.

Centennial is currently seeking business partners to participate in this program, which runs from March through August, featuring 56 partner businesses — eight per month and an additional eight from The Streets at SouthGlenn.

“By supporting local businesses, you are actively reinvesting in your community, enriching the local economy, increasing the diversity of available products and services, and improving the quality of life for everyone in Centennial,” said Corri Spiegel, director of economic development.

Studies show that money spent at independently owned local businesses stays in a community, multiplying as it circulates.

Dollars spent in locally owned businesses have three times the impact on the community, simultaneously creating jobs, funding more city services through sales tax, and promoting community development and neighborhood improvement, according to studies by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance.

In Midcoast, Maine, the Institute for Local Self-Reliance conducted a study to see if they could prove that dollars spent in locally owned businesses did in fact have three times the impact of chain store dollars.

Eight locally owned businesses participated in the study, sharing detailed information on their revenue and expenditures.

The result: when residents in the Midcoast region spent $100 at a big box retailer, their purchase generated $14 in local spending by the retailer. That same $100 spent at a locally-owned business generated $45 in local spending, according to the study.

Centennial residents and employees are encouraged to register for the program and become 2009 “passport” holders for the Explore Centennial program. Passports will be provided by the city and validated at participating businesses, or by the city, during their featured month.

Additional registration information is available online.

Beginning in March, the city will release a monthly Explorer’s Guide featuring eight local businesses. Any special promotions or discounts will be listed in the Explorer’s Guide at that time.
