Coffman signs on to block pay raise

How does a salary of $169,300 with generous benefits from health insurance to retirement sound?

U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo., says that is enough for him, so he signed onto a move to not accept the annual raise for congressional members.

This year, that raise would be $4,700.

Coffman’s office said refusing the raise would save about $2.5 million on the 535 members of the House and Senate.

In 2008, the cost of living increase was $4,100. House Democrats blocked the congressional raise in 2006 until the House passed an increase in the federal minimum wage. In retaliation, House Republicans blocked the Democrats’ attempt to revive the raise for 2007.

Blocking this raise does not affect simply the Congress. Salaries for senior government executives are based off the congressional salary rate and complicated calculations.

No date for a reading of the bill has been set. The bill was introduced by Reps. Ron Paul, R-Texas, and Harry Mitchell, R-Ariz.

Coffman represents Colorado’s Congressional District 6, which encompasses all or parts of Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, Jefferson and Park counties.
